Kids with health insurance are more likely to get the care they need to ensure their healthy development, including preventive care, immunizations, and basic routine care with their own doctors. The Solano Kids Insurance Program (SKIP) helps kids get the coverage they need by assisting families who want to enroll their children into Medi-Ca and Healthy Families programs, or into the Healthy Kids Solano program for those children who do not qualify for state-sponsored care.  

History & Success So Far

The Solano Kids Insurance Program (SKIP) was established in 1998 to address the issue of families with uninsured children. Since its inception, SKIP staff have been able to submit health insurance applications for more than 18,000 children and adults.

The SKIP staff is making significant progress in reaching the program’s goal to insure all kids. For example, in 2001, there was an estimated 21,000 children without health coverage in Solano County (2005 CHIS Study). Today, there are less than 5,000 uninsured children living in Solano County. There are 53 Solano County elementary schools where all the children have health insurance.

Solano County currently has one of the lowest rates of uninsured children in the state of California.

Community Outreach

SKIP has developed a social services marketing model that provides outreach to schools, clinics, businesses, faith organizations, and other community-based organizations. SKIP’s customer service philosophy, which is that every individual we encounter should be treated with dignity and respect, and our diligent work in creating win-win partnerships with the communities we serve, has contributed to SKIP’s success in reaching uninsured children and adults.

SKIP Staff

 The SKIP program staff help parents with health coverage enrollment of their children and selection of their primary care provider. In addition, SKIP staff provides information on other services for which the family may qualify, such as the State’s CalFresh Program (also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, at the Federal level).

Our SKIP staff work with families by:

• Providing information about health care services and insurance options
• Assisting families who want to be enrolled in Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Kaiser Child Health Plan, Healthy Kids Solano, or other health care programs
• Connecting families with needed health care services and resources
• Advocating on behalf of enrolled families to navigate the various health care and government systems
• Supporting legislative activity to improve health care services for children
